The Unobits platform
Organizations and workspaces
What an organization is in Unobits, how its workspace and URL relate to it, and how people who run several businesses switch between them.
On this page
In Unobits your business is an organization. The organization owns your records, your team's membership, your settings and your subscription. The workspace is what the organization looks like inside the app — its modules, its vocabulary and its layout.
Organization#
An organization is the boundary around everything:
- Records — contacts, projects, invoices, files, messages — belong to one organization and are never visible to another.
- Members belong to the organization with a role. One person can be a member of more than one organization.
- Settings, integrations and automations are set per organization.
- Billing — the plan, seats and credits — is per organization.
The person who creates an organization is its Owner and holds every permission. See Roles and permissions.
Your organization's address#
The organization's short name (its slug) is the first part of every address in the app:
https://unobits.app/acme-studio/clients/crm
└─ organization └─ area of the appLinks you share only open for people who belong to that organization and have access to the area. The Owner can see and change the organization's name and slug in Admin → Organization. See Organization profile and branding.
Workspace#
The workspace is the organization as its people experience it: which modules lead in the sidebar, what records are called, which fields they carry and which stages they move through. It is generated from what the owner told Unobits about the business during setup and can be changed later.
Changing the workspace never moves or rewrites data. A contact is still the same record whether the workspace calls it a Lead, a Guest or a Patient. See How Unobits adapts to your business.
Running more than one business#
If you run several businesses — different legal entities, different customers, different books — each should be its own organization. Each has its own records, members, workspace and billing, so a hotel and a letting agency owned by the same person can each read correctly.
- The Enterprise plan allows one account to own multiple organizations. Solo and Pro include one. See Plan limits.
- Switching between organizations rebuilds the app for the one you choose: you will see a brief Rebuilding workspace screen, after which every label, module and field belongs to the new organization.
What is not available yet#
Unobits does not yet have a layer between the organization and its groups for independently run branches or business units that share some data (sometimes called operating units). Until it does, choose between one organization with groups, or separate organizations.
