The Unobits platform
Notifications
The one notifier behind every alert, how notifications stack, and the quiet hours, presence and per-type settings that decide what reaches you.
On this page
Every module in Unobits notifies you through one notifier, so the rules you set apply everywhere: a chat mention, a failed payment, a task assigned to you and a site going down all follow the same quiet hours and the same presence.
Three different surfaces#
It helps to know which surface answers which question:
| Surface | Answers | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|
| Notifications — the bell, pop-up toasts, desktop notifications | What just happened? | Brief. Read or dismiss them. |
| Triage | What deserves my attention right now? | Until the reason stops being true. |
| Inbox | What conversations and work exist that I may need to deal with? | Until resolved or archived. |
Something important can appear in all three — as a toast when it happens, in Triage while it needs you, and in the Inbox until it is resolved. They are three views of the same item, not three copies.
The notifications panel#
Open the bell in the header, or press Alt+Shift+N. Notifications of the same kind are stacked: ten messages in one conversation show as one entry with and 9 more, rather than ten rows.
Control what reaches you#
Open Settings → Notifications & sounds:
- Alerts — turn on native desktop notifications, choose where toasts appear on screen, and choose which kinds notify you: mentions and direct replies, direct messages, incoming calls, tasks and reminders.
- Sounds — notification and ring volume, notification and ringing tones, and whether messages, mentions and system events play a sound.
- Quiet — quiet hours between two times (leave both empty to stay quiet until you switch it off), mute notifications during calls, and mute while your status is Busy.
Presence#
Your presence affects notifications: Do not disturb silences them, and Busy can too if you chose that in Settings. Presence and who can see it are set in Settings → Presence & privacy — see Your personal settings.
Module-specific settings#
Modules do not keep a second notification system. Chat's settings, for example, point you back to this one. A few modules decide what is worth raising in their own settings — the Inbox has admission floors for what the organization is shown, and automations can send notifications as an action — but how and when you are told is always decided here.
